ok- finished my simenon rack...pretty pleased (i made the pic in B/W...in the spirit...). I'll report back on my experience with keeping the pipes upside-down.

I haven't been following this thread. Wow! Nice rack! I mean the pic on Clint's computer. Seriously, do you have a set of plans for that? I would really like to build one. Very nice.

Hi Bob , I think 12Tone has plans for his , mine is just a whatnot shelf I swiped from the wife's junk shack & drilled holes in for pipes.

Thanks, Bob. I threw away my sketches when I finished the rack...Below's what I had scanned and fished out of my recycling bin, (sorry some of the pics came so big).

The whole thing is oak (but if I went back, I'd go with walnut instead,as the oak is very hard.)
-The 4 shelves: 20"x3"x 6/16". Nine 1"-holes every 2 inches. (The center of the first hole is at 2", the center of the second hole at 4", etc...)
Notice notches 1/2" from either end to accomadate vertical wall-mount
-The eight brackets are made of the same wood, 6/16" thick. I fashioned these after the ones on the Simenon (double humped)
-The two vertical mounts are 1/2 square dowels. They're about 28" long. The shelves are 8" apart and the mounts continue a couple of inches passed the last bracket.

Picked this up on ebay yesterday. Liked it because it held 14 and was older and had a little character. This is going to sit on a 160+ year old buffet in my dining room. I imagine a cabinet will replace it some day, but with any luck PAD won't make more than 14 necessary for a while.

Very nice. However, if my experience with Pipe Acquisition Disorder is anything to go by, "replace" is probably the wrong word; more like "augment"

Well I wasn't going to post a picture of this makeshift pipe rack I stole from the wife's junk shack as my Radio/Smoking Shack is very messy!!! LOL ,Oh well here goes, this is about 2/3 rd of my pipes the rest are stored away in a box from when I changed Radio Sheds & I haven't had time to get them back out yet.There is a tobacco shelf above the Maco 750 Amplifier.

These pipes( If it's the one's I think you are referring to ) are pipes from The Magical Fairy Wood. That's what The Wife calls the one Brim sent me anyhow

We just moved about a week ago. I always kept my pipes in a big mason jar so when we got into this house i wanted to hang my pipes. So i got those toothbrush holders from wal mart. The ones with the two suction cups on the back and took the cups out and screwed them into the wall. Maybe a good idea or bad however i thought it was good for a laugh anyway lol.

I bought a nice vintage rack off the bay, it's solid walnut and designed to hold 8 pipes but to my dismay very few of my pipe will fit in it, I have resorted to putting them in upside down with is not how it was intended to be used. So I will be designing and fabricating a custom rack very soon, it seems most "traditional" racks are designed for "traditional" pipes a.k.a. straight billiard style not freehands or larger styles.

Yes, I have experienced problems with a few of my larger-stemmed pipes, too Just one of those 'First World problems', I'm afraid
