in defense of new music

it's blippy, it's bloopy, it's silly and bad. But a lot of it isn't on the radio. It isn't Christina Aguilara, it isn't Lady Gaga. So here's to new music, share yours. Catchy, anti-pop, post-rock, whatever.

Here is my newest favorite, non major record label band. And it's not Lady Gaga either, seriously..... lady gaga? even my 3 year old could come up with a better name then that!

The Takers

With lines like

"all my new friends live in bottle, whiskey, wine and pills" and "if the lights are still on this Friday, I'm gonna drink 'till they turn them off"

How could you not like it?

Now that's what I call good new music.

John Cage has nothin' on them birds!

I just began drumming in band called Juice Falcon--does that count as bird rock?
You can check them out on myspace under Juice Falcon--I didn't know how to link it to here.

Oh yeah, at this point in time I've just been listening Dinosaur Jr.'s new album Farm.

I recently found out about a progressive rock band called Proto-Kaw. It is actually a very early version of the band Kansas (and they actually used the name Kansas). They disbanded in the early '70's, and Kerry Livgren went on to join another band, which renamed itself Kanses, which became the Kansas we all know. Livgren was their main song writer.

Livgren quit Kansas in the early '80's, after becoming a Christian, and went on to have a pretty succesful solo career.

Fast-forward to 2004. I will spare you all the details, but what ended up happening is that the original members, from the early version of the band had a reunion, and they ended up recording some new music under the name Proto-Kaw (Proto, means, of course, "first" or "early version of" and Kaw is a Native American word for "Kansas."). They recorded two or three CD's. If you like american Prog Rock, you just might like them.

Sadly, they disbanded in December of 2008, while recording their newest CD. Not sure what will happen to the music already recorded for the album. It was supposed to become a solo album by Kerry Livgren featuring members of Proto-Kaw, but Livgren had a stroke several months ago, and is still in the process of recovering.

Sorry for the long-winded post, but there really isn't a short way to tell this story. Anyway, if you like Prog, check out Proto-Kaw.
