Time for Nosewarming

Postby Taspiper » Tue Jan 17, 2012 2:36 am

I've been wanting a nosewarmer for a while now so decided to knock one up.
The bowl is 7/8 diameter so it's a full size pipe but with a short stubby stem. Apple shaped because I like the hand feel. Hand cut cumberland stem.
If you also have a nosewarmer I'd like to see some pics....

That's a wicked pipe! I love the look of that. It reminds me of some of the pipes that Chris Askwith makes.

Out of interest, does it clinch well? Looks like a pretty aggressive taper on that stem with a relatively small bit.

Lovely pipe Rolf. That shape has a sort of Big Ben Ranger type thing going :)

You'll find pics of one of my first ever pipe purchases in this thread. A rustic Stonehaven nosewarmer ;

Great little pipes that I am glad are finally getting the credit they deserve on this here forum. Aye

The reason for the short stem was to save weight. I wanted a full size briar pipe but with the weight of a cob.
The button end has much the same dimensions as any other pipe but because of the steep taper it pushes my lips out a bit.
It feels a little strange at first but you soon get used to it and then after a while it almost feels natural. Not too different from moving to a P lip but better. I had thought of curving the end in top and bottom to give a more slender bit but I like it as is.
Probably more a pocket pipe too.
Having no restriction in the air way it smokes like a beaut and I can't wait to see how it is with a bit of cake.
Cheers Rolf

I haven't seen a stone haven in the flesh Jim but I reckon it's similar to a wee pipe that I still have that saw much use many years ago. It was a cheap as chips Westminster Delux Made in France, rusticated too. I smoked that wee pipe till the button dropped off from use!
I just picked it up to get the name and had a sniff of the bowl, it's still ghosted after twenty years or so not being smoked.
Amphora red I reckon.
Aye those were tremendous days them were....

Oh and I almost forgot....
Another reason for the stubby tapered stem and full size bowl...
You can get a decent grip on the bowl to poke that little stem right into someone's chest to make a real good point....right Jim!

There have been a few pipes that have very short stems (like nosewarmers) that I like, but I am concerned about the temp of the smoke with such a short distance to travel. Is this a concern or just not an issue for you?

It has a nice easy draw which I find is important as any restriction seems to have you pulling more causing tounge bite.
The smoke may be fractionally hotter but it could be that is what I'm expecting.
I smoke more in slow wisps so don't notice any difference.
If it was thought to be an issue the double chamber type pipes by acme or Daniel (inverted calabash) may help in cooling the smoke.
Cheers Rolf

Hmmmm....you been following me around then ?

As my mother would say, " You could have someone's eye out with that thing "

P.S. That wee Stonehaven still reeked of Condor when I rediscovered it again. It was love at first sniff

I believe I met with Daniel at the West Coast Pipe Show, but don't have a way to reconnect with him. Do you know his website or where he sells through?
