IT'S TOTAL B.S. Typical propaganda. As someone stated, there is not one shred of scientific evidence. Scientific American of all publications should do their homework before publishing some idiots attempt to make a name for himself.

I AGREE Bob, People are so Damed Gullible, How in the Bloody Hell can they compare breathing smoke from the exposed air around them to smoking & inhaling the smoke themselves?"???? I agree with both of you. Trouble is though, people who're vehemently anti smoking ( or anti anything for that matter ) will come up with any old shite to justify their stance.

Ever noticed how, just prior to almost never seeing anyone smoke in movies / TV, it was always the villain who smoked ? Obviously , there's a strong correlation between smoking and criminal activity. Pretty soon now if you find yourself in court, even on some minor traffic offence or suchlike, and you smoke, your sentence will be much harsher than that of a good clean non smoking citizen.

Prosecutor : Furthermore M' lud, not content with breaking the 30mph speed limit in a built-up area, the accused was seen lighting a filthy pipe. May I remind the court that the area the accused was caught speeding is within a mile radius of a childrens play area.

I wish I was joking but this'll probably be the case before long.

As a scientist in the environmental consulting industry, I say "show me the proof". Establishing the presence of a toxin is one thing. Being able to prove its related to a specific cause is another. You can skew any data set. Wiping the furniture inside a smokers house and claiming it has toxins known to harm man present AND attributed to smoking can only be valid if furniture inside a completely non-smoking environment were sampled as well for comparison or base-line study. You also need to look at concentrations, migration pathways,etc., etc. The toxin MUST be able to migrate into the organisms system in sufficient concentrations to be harmful. The toxin just being present doesn't cut it. This is the science behind "legal" pollutants being allowed to be emitted into our air, waters, and soils by industry. These industries aren't saying they are not emitting these toxins, they are just proving they are not emitting these toxins into migration pathways, or in enough quantity to do harm.

Your post reminds me of a recent work related trip to California. I passed a sign going into the lobby of the hotel room that read:

Yeah, and if you drink too much water, breath too much oxygen, etc., etc., it will KILL YOU!! The whole frickin' world in its natural state contains chemicals known to be harmfull to man, blah, blah, blah!!! OK, you dont want to be around it, fine!! But, allow me to establish places where a person CAN be around it if they want. There should be smoking bars/pubs, restaurants, and everything else you may choose. Why not smoking flights, or entire smoking hotels?? To be honest, I think its the fact the non-smoking places would suck and NOBODY would go to them if they had a choice.
