I found this "book" a long time ago browsing the Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club website. I tossed it on my Kindle and read it here and there. Anyway, I take it with a grain of salt because unfortunately it is hard to trust either side, because both have an agenda. I haven't found much truly independent research that gets much publicity. But the overarching thing I always read is how every decision is based on, in todays standards, junk science or misinterpreted reports from NCI, OSHA and the Surgeon General. Unfortunately for us, who just want the truth, these can be horribly biased or agenda driven.

Anyway, its called "In Defence of Smokers" by Lauren A. Colby, its free and a decent read.

Here in Oregon a fair percentage of tobacco tax is alloted for health care programs "for the children". As a parent, my duty is clear. I must go through as much tobacco as possible in order to fund these programs. Afterall, it is for the children.

I agree with Gnossos, third-hand smoke is one of the dumbest phrases I've ever heard. There are so many more serious things polluting our air, water, and food that this is simply ludicrous. I remember a story I read about a woman who was sueing a motel because she was in a non-smoking room next to a smoking room and she claimed smoke had entered her room through the electrical outlets in the wall.

The real problem with cigarettes is not the tobacco but all the chemicals they treat it with. There is an excellent article on the Gatlin-Burlier website on this very subject. It really pisses me off when they lump all types of smoking into a single category when they present their statistics. Pipe and cigar smoking are two very different things from cigarette smoking. I believe pipe smoking can actually be beneficial in the calming effect it has on some people. I am bi-polar and have taken all kinds of meds to control it but I can smoke a bowl of my favorite tobacco and and get the same or better effects. Of course since the antis have made it virtually impossible to smoke anywhere indoors in public I'm back on all the meds. Even Einstein talked about the calming effect pipe smoking had in human affairs.

Next it will be fourth and fifth hand smoke causing all the health problems and they will try to outlaw smoking in private residences. Well, they can get my pipe when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers!
