The Balkan Sobranie Give Away Thread

If its about the fine hobby of pipe smoking but not specific to one of the other forums post about it here.

The Balkan Sobranie Give Away Thread

Postby BillConnelly » Tue Jan 19, 2010 1:14 am

So as some of you may be aware, I recently won a tin of Balkan Sobranie that was claimed to be over 50 years old. It seems to me that this mixture has an almost mythical status among pipe tobaccos, and I can say, it is very pleasant smoke. Seeing as I have a stock of tobacco that has been claimed to be "the holy grail" I feel it would be very selfish for me to smoke it all myself (especially because I am not the worlds biggest Balkan fan).

So now that I have successfully (or should I say, adequately) rehydrated this mixture, it is time for me to give it away. Basically, sending each of you a two bowl sample from here in New Zealand would cost me a small fortune. So I have devised a cunning plan. What is going to happen is this: I am going to send all of the tobacco to the first person who responds to this thread. Then they are going to try some. Then they are going to send the tobacco to the person who responds next. And so on. Each person should private message the person above them in the thread there postal details. Hopefully good old fashion manners should keep everyone honest.

Eligibility:
1) I didn't want to do this, but I have been recommended that I only make this give away open to people with more than 20 posts to their name.
2) If you're serious about your privacy, and you're not willing to let someone know your mailing address, then don't respond.
3) No one is going to be able to tell if you keep a huge amount of tobacco, but I think 2-4 bowls seems reasonable per person.

"Pay It Forward" with a dash of pipe smoking. I like it.

Great idea sir, I've heard that Balkan Supreme, while being one of the biggest contenders, doesn't come close. It's a privilege to have a chance to smoke this stuff.

I suppose it only makes sense to get in on this opportunity. So lets have at it and share in the wealth.

Seeing as I'm sending it from New Zealand, I would hope someone would be willing to send something from the US to the UK, so long as you'd be willing to send it back to the US.

Ok - I'm in. Whatever it costs in postage, we get chance to sample some of this now sainted tobacco.

I actually did think about getting in on this, but decided if I did it would turn out to be the greatest tobacco ever. Then what? :o
I'm better off not knowing what I'm missing. :)

The tobacco is already winging it's way to the US. It should get to Derik in maybe 7 days.

Could we see comments on the tobacco posted in this thread by those who feel so inclined?

That is really nice of you, Bill!
I don't qualify, but...since I do remember that wondrous weed, I will quash my insane jealousy and will hope that some fellers/whatever-the-feminine-form-of-fellers-is that have never had the pleasure will chime in and take advantage of this extreme generosity--you will not regret it. You will only regret not ever finding it again, unless you take out a mortgage and scour eBay.

The feminine form of fella? Fellette?

Anyway, hopefully Derek shouldn't be too far away from getting the parcel. I'm gonna be furious if it gets lost. But they wanted to charge me $40 (~$30 USD) for international tracked postage, and I couldn't bring myself to pay it.

I believe it is sitting in my campus mail room right now, I may have to wait until Monday to claim it. I just got the notification today. Cheers!

Picked the stuff up yesterday. I'll only snag a bowl or two since there's not a lot there.

Send me your address sometime ewlewis.

Here's hoping there might be a couple of small bowls of this baccy for the UK brethren :) CPWSolf & myself that is ...

Maybe someone could split a small amount off and send it here - while the major portion does its USA tour?

There should be more than enough for everyone. It was nearly the full 2 oz, minus a bit that was dirty, and two bowl fulls that I took. I'm just glad it made it across the Pacific. I'm not really sure how many pipes you can pack from 2 oz of tobacco. There are only 5 people in this thread (I think), so that's nearly half an ounce each.
