Bending pipe stems

If its about the fine hobby of pipe smoking but not specific to one of the other forums post about it here.

Bending pipe stems

:?: I have just bought a curved pipe from Ebay but the stem has 'straightened out'. Anyone know of a way to put the bend back into the stem.

You can do it any number of ways.

Pop a pipe cleaner in the stem, just to make sure the airway stays open. Get a large bowl of cold water ready.

You can light a candle, hold the stem about 3" above it and rotate it (keep it moving!) until it heats up enough to bend. Takes about a minute. Bend to shepe and put in cold water - you have to hold it till it cools off.

This method works really well, but there's a danger of burning the stem if you aren't careful.

IF you want, you can use a pot of boiling water, that will make the stem bendable in about 3 minutes. Bend and cool as per before.

Boiling water will yield you a grey, dull stem that needs polishing, so if you don't have that capability, think about not using hot water.

You can also use a heat gun or hair dryer.

Excellent advice, thank you. Will take a handful of tranquillisers and elect the candle method. Again my thanks

I have never tried the method but have read that you can also accomplish this by burying the stem in a pan of sand and heating it in the oven.

This may work well with Vulcanite stems. Thanks

I'm curious as to how a pipe stem would just straighten out??? Did it arrive that way?

For those who replied, can you heat and bend acrylic and lucite the same as vulcanite?

Vulcanite is just a hard rubber, and it has a sort of memory about the shape it is original extruded or molded in. You can soften it up with heat and bend it, and then "set it" by cooling it off, but over time, some stems will just slowly resume their original position.

Lucite can be bent the same way, but it is much fiddlier - the rubber gets slowly more pliable, and lucite goes from completely hard to completely soft in about 3 degrees, right around 100 C, and it burns easy if you use a focused heat source. Bending lucite nicely is a bit of an art.
