TOTM: Feb. - Apr

Each month we'll have some focused reviews on a particular blend.

TOTM: Feb. - Apr

Postby ewlewis » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:18 am

So it is that time again. The way I see it we should first decide a subset of tobacco and then widdle Down. What I mean is we have to first decide a direction.

First: As suggested previously do we want to pick a blender and sample 3 offerings this quarter?

Or

Second: Choose three off the list of named but not chosen in previous months. This list is in the discussion from the last TOTM decision thread.

Or

Third: Do we just pick a random three again?

Personally I wish we steer clear of #3.

I'd agree with 1, but I'm probably not going to be able to play. I love reading your thoughts though.

I also like the first suggestion. I'd go with C&D, McClelland or GLP.

If this ends up being C&D, may I suggest we do sleeper bulk blends. There is no sense in doing OJK or Epiphany, we all know they're great. I especially would love to share my newfound love of C&D Cordial. This is a world class Lat blend, and the price is as wallet friendly as you could ask.

I think it is apparent that we will use one blender. Is everyone okay with C&D?

assuming we go with C&D, here are my recommendations for two of the three:

Cordial - you'll have to go a little out of your way to get some because it isn't one of their bulk blends that every vendor stocks, but it is an inexpensive Lat blend that I feel is every bit as good as Greg Pease's creations. Sold by lilbrown, C&D and available for order through Mars.

Red Odessa - this one is pretty common. The reason I recommend this one is that it's a Lat blend, but it is not a traditional Lat blend at all. This one is all about the Va. It's kind of a Va dominant version of the American Blend, sort of like Three Friars with added Latakia. Really unique.

I like the idea of going with just one blender, and C&D is a fine choice. I am not in the market for new tobaccos right now but I am already in possession of several C&D blends, so whatever is decided is OK by me. I will participate as selection allows.

So let's call it C&D. Now we need to rattle off some blends. May be fun to have 3 different genres as well.

I've been wanting to try Red Odessa for a while, so I like the idea of that blend.

If we want to consider throwing an aro in the mix what about Founding Fathers.

Riverboat Gambler has had my attention for a while too. As has Black Frigate.

These are all C&D blends that I haven't yet tried, as are most C&D Blends so if I named a bomb, disregard 8-) Really I'm cool with anything

I vote to avoid the obvious suspects that everyone has smoked already. My vote is for 3 lesser known but outstanding blends.

Lat blend - Cordial
this stuff is just dynamite, Greg Pease would be happy to have his label on it

Burley - I like Americana a lot, but maybe it's too hard to get. Riverboat Gambler or Easy Times would be fun.

VA - Red Odessa, technically a Lat blend, but this one is all about the Va. Think Three Friars with Latakia.

That's my $.02

I'm gonna try to play along at home this time around, especially since it sounds like C&D, which I want to explore more of. Three I'd like to try are:

-Easy Times: KY/VA/Lat

-Guilford Courthouse: VA, pinch of Izmir

-Three Friars: VA/Burley/Perique

Just throwing those out. I won't be sad if you guys go another direction. :D

I'm not real familiar with many C&D blends yet. I would prefer no more than 1 latakia or perique blend though. Just my 2¢.

So we have 6 blends out there. This is what I am thinking. Lets look at these 6 blends and see which ones are the most readily available. Those will in turn be the ones we can use. The idea is that we can find all three in one source.

Reckon we could just purchase direct, wouldn't you think, ew? Muddler, how available is C&D in your neck o' the woods?

I noticed Easy Times is on Mike's list, too, so should we tick that one off? Mike, you said the magic words on Cordial (Greg Pease), and the cavendish is interesting. I'm in. And if Three Friars falls into "too common" territory for y'all, that's cool with me.

How about we go with one from each list (Cordial and Three Friars) and then also go with the one mutual (Easy Times). What do you all think?
