Heres's my latest creation

I've got long way to go but here it is ...

I think the stem could have been a tad shorter.

Bad photo but all I could find.

Looks really good! I like the shape/proportion. The stem/button look comfortable. The stain/finish look pro and nature helped with the grain, the swirly smoke look on the shank is pretty cool. Did Lee give you some pointers? :ugeek:

Super piece of craftsmanship, Bob. I'd love to do something like that, though I don't have the time or opportunity as yet. This is lovely, lovely work. The grain is simply beautiful and the finish is superb. Congratulations here. I'm interested in why you feel the stem needs to be shorter. Overall proportions, personal preference or feel? Is there an actual proportion to these shapes or is it an individual thing? Whatever, well done indeed.

Thanks all. It's just a hobby at this point and I wish I could spend more time on it. Hopefully soon. Eventually I'll need a metal lathe to progress.

I can see what you mean by the stem length, if you were going to make a lovat style pipe. In that case it is a bit long. However, the pipe itself does not have a true lovat look, so your stem actually looks fantastic. I feel the subtle differences provide it a unique look that works well. Good job!

As has been said, the stem is of an odd length, too long for a lovat and too short for a usual saddle on a billiard, but who cares? It's gorgeous and I'd certainly smoke it!

I like it very much - it's grand to look at and to my mind would make a great outdoor pipe for flakes. Is it too long? Personally I don't think so; the proportions look balanced to me regardless of standard definitions - but then again The Good Lord in His Infinite Wisdom saw fit to issue me with a long nose and I have never been able to get along with overshort pipes.

Great work and thanks for posting

That pipemakers forum seems to be a friendly space wherein makers teach each other; and US pipemakers seem open to teaching on site to a newer maker. What a lovely sharing, as I assume it's all done without exchanging money.
