2014 POY Last Call and Signup

2014 POY Last Call and Signup

Postby KevinM » Thu Jan 02, 2014 2:03 pm

OK, I gotta get with Pete at Invicta REAL soon to let him know our pipe preference. The winner of the poll and the 2014 POY is the antique finished, smooth billiard with tapered stem. This is it, and no changes will be made. I am requesting a metal band with "T&P 2014" inscribed on the band. Pete stated he could get the pipe done for around $100. Based on the poll, 20 members voted on shape, and about 26 voted on finish. To further confuse matters, in a separate thread only about 13 stated they wanted to participate. So consider this the final sign up for the antique finished, smooth billiard 2014 POY. With the pipe selected, hopefully it will make it easier for members to commit. I would like to get back with Pete no later than mid-January (about two weeks) to finalize. As of now, I would be looking at 25, maybe 30 pipes max we would commit to. PLEASE let me know on this thread if you are in within the next two weeks so I can finalize numbers with Pete!!!

I will be sending Pete at Invicta an email soon letting him know the final selection and try to get a hard number on price. I will also try to get payment info out soon, but if you visit his website, that info should be posted. Because a set number of pipes of will be requested, I will need to set up a way to get him the info on who signed up and is "eligible" for the pipes ordered. Keep the sign in posts coming!!!

Well fellas, there are a total of 10 committed T&P members, including myself, for the pipe. 11 counting one for Eric. I emailed Pete at Invicta and notified him numbers were low. I am waiting to hear back from him to make sure he will do it regardless of number, and gave him our final vote for the smooth, antique finished billiard to get a cost. As soon as I get a final answer from Pete, I am going to commit to the 11 pipes and 11 pipes only.

Thanks for setting this up, Kevin.

I'm looking forward to this pipe not only because it's the POY, but also to see what the Invicta make is like. Invicta looks like it's got a lot of potential as a source for pretty decently priced old school classic shapes - without any spin.

By "spin" I mean:
Savinelli makes classic shapes at an everyday price, but the bowl is often the size of a bucket; and there's often something flamboyant about the finish, the banding, or the stem in the bargain.

Peterson makes classic shapes at an everyday price, but the shank is often as thick as a telephone pole.

Stanwell makes classic shapes at an everyday price, but they look - Danish.

Wow, you summed up those brands for me so well, couldnt have said it better. Mind you, I have many Petersons and Savinellis.

Thanks again Kevin for setting this up, hopefully the low turnout will not pose a problem. I am really excited to give Invicta a whirl.

I'm a bit surprised that more of the Usual Suspects did not sign on for this. I wonder if choosing Invicta has something to do with that, at least as far as US members go? There have been a number of posts from some of the Brits here about how good the pipes are, but they are not marketed in the US AFAIK and it might be that many US members just don't want to throw $100+ at an unknown?

Personally, I am fine with the choice, worst case is I wind up with a pipe that doesn't get smoked often but I've got scores of others so it doesn't really matter. However, some others may be a little more concerned about value for the money and this is definitely not the no-brainer that last year's Ferndown was from that standpoint. Just a thought and I appreciate Kevin's efforts in any event.

I'm excited to try this maker. I've not seen one in person.

Thanks for the hard work putting this forward.

I appreciate Kevin's efforts here as well, these things are not easily done. But I will freely admit to being one of the few people in the pipe smoking community who has enough pipes.

Personally, I don't really know what the pipe is so I can't commit to buying it. Is there any way to have a prototype made so we can see the pipe (with the band)? High quality pictures would also be a requirement for me. :)
