Why do I like Skiff Mixture?

Postby Vlad » Mon Mar 01, 2010 2:23 am

I've only been smoking for about a year, and I don't think I have a very discriminating palate. I know I like the smokiness of Latakia, but there's something about Skiff Mixture beyond that that I just love. I'm also smoking HH Vintage Syrian, which is choke full of Latakia goodness, but lacks some quality I just can't describe. What is it, and what other tobaccos will taste like it?

Conversely, it has the WORST tin smell of all my blends! By comparison, I love the way MacB Navy Flake smells.

Help a noob out.

I've been thinking about this, myself. To my untrained palate, it seems there is something going on with Skiff and Squadron Leader (my preference), both, that I haven't noticed in other mixtures. I wondered if the orientals were more upfront in these two than in other stuff I've tried, but hopefully someone with more experience can fill us in.

Skiff is an oriental blend, and I think SL falls on the side of oriental also. Heavy latakia blends can be very aromatic and even pungent, but latakia is not a strong tobacco. I think a good bet would be Rattray's Red Rapparee for a classic oriental, or one of the many mild English blends around.

MacB blends all smell good to me, they case almost everything in honey. That raises the sugar content and makes them all bitey to me.

I'm really looking forward to SL, then, as it's one of my last unopened tins. It's going to be hard to go back to Prince Albert after this.

Not identical to a Gawith by any means, but a lovely oriental heavy mixture is Presbyterian. Very easy smoking and just a little sweet like the Gawith offerings.

I like it because it tastes like an amped-up Dunhill Early Morning Pipe ;) :D

ahh...now we're talking! Lots of people in my church enjoy theology...I just wish they smoked pipes! Quite a few are of the "Christians should not smoke" crowd. Lots of folks I notice abuse or misuse 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. They need to read the context. My Pastor however sees no problem with smoking of any kind, as long as it does not interfere, and is not abused. He also sees the differance between cigarette and cigar/pipe smoking. Sorry about the rant-one of my peeves is the Christian smoking issue. A prominent member of a church I once attended looked down his nose on my then cigarette habit. I later found out he was an adulterer.

Just tell them that C.S. Lewis smoked a pipe, and also St Paul. Ok, I'm lying about the last part.

LOL "John the Baptist smoked a pipe and so did Noah. So shut up."

EWL I figure if the answer to a tobacco question isn't Presbyterian Mixture or Mac Baren Club Blend, then the question wasn't asked right.
