John Patton's "Honeymoon"

Postby Gig » Thu Feb 04, 2010 8:42 am

This is an interesting Oriental blend for me, sweet, spicy and slightly smoky. It is not full in flavor but medium with a lot of character. So many of the other Orientals are very one dimensional, either tasting only of Turkish leaf or Latakia. This is all rounded and the blended tobaccos all rear their heads throughout the entire smoke. It’s a well behaved tobacco which never bit me and smoked to a fine gray ash to the bottom of my bowl. This is a very good Oriental blend for those who prefer a lighter and sweeter blend as I do. I highly recommend it to those individuals :D

I've never tried an "oriental blend" would like to try some. I have a tin of Robert McConnell Oriental tucked away in the cellar but haven't tried it yet. I think it has a smidge of latakia in it as well. Still have a few of John's blends stored that I haven't tried yet....

I've never tried a strictly oriental blend either. I think I'll look at some orientals for my next tobacco buying spree.

Oh, you've got to try a oriental blend, especially if you don't care about having lots of nicotine. I recommend McClellands Grand Samsun.

I have a tin of McClelland's Katerini Classic in my cellar, unopened. I'm planning on trying it after I have smoked down more of the tins and jars I already have open.

mcclellend's frog morton on the bayou is an excellent oriental blend. has basma in it, which is just about the best oriental in my opinion.

I've smoked FMOTB, so I guess I've had an oriental blend? I thought it was more of a Balkan, with the Latakia and all- does a traditional "oriental blend" normally have Latakia? What do they usually consist of?

I do enjoy orientals but find that the perique in FMoTB distracts from the oriental itself. To the other other question, it does seem that many orientals have latakia in them.

Latakia is smoked oriental leaf. I wouldn't call any of the Frog Morton series an Oriental in any functional sense. I'd call them English blends...
