Oldest Pipe in Your Smoking Rotation

Oldest Pipe in Your Smoking Rotation

Postby Marksthx138 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:56 pm

I was recently reading an article in my Pipes and Tobacco magazine about how much of a pipe smoker Mark Twain was. Accompanying the article were pictures of his pipes that are currently on display at a Mark Twain museum. That started me thinking (good thing the hang over was over) and wondering. Do any of you here smoke with any frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, etc.) a pipe that is a hundred years old or older? 80 years and older? 60 years or older? I think you get my idea. As for me, I have a couple Doc Grabows from the 1960s, and I think that they're the oldest pipes in my smoking rotation. So, what are the oldest pipes in your smoking rotation, and how old are they?

I have a Grabow that I have dated with some help from an expert to 1945. It's in great shape, I smoke it about every other day.

I have a Peterson hand-carved cherry wood which is supposed to be from around 1879. I smoke it VERY occasionally!

Mine would be about 30 years old (bought from new). I did once do the "unforgivable" - gave up smoking and threw all of my pipes away.

Oh my, you actually threw them away Alan? I have a few, Mel-O Marxman, The business ran from 1943 to 1953 so these pipes were made sometime during that period.I have several Ben Wade pipes but there not near as old ,although getting old like myself lol , I have a few other odds and ends that would be fairly old but not gonna take the time to list them now. The Marxman would be my oldest pipes I think.

The Marxman's are a well kept secret I think. Many swear by them, and I've heard Marxman, Weber, and Ehrlich referred to as the "Poor man's Dunhill". I have one on the way.

The only older pipe I own happens to also be my best find.
Its a 30-50 year old (still trying to figure out the exact year) Savinelli. I found it at a rummage sale and talked the seller down to $12. She had bought it from a farmer in Iowa, and he said that he had purchased it on a trip to Italy. I don't know if that is fact or not. But its a beautiful piece, lightly smoked, in great shape.
MY PIPE
When love grows cool, thy fire still warms me;
When friends are fled, thy presence charms me.
If thou art full, though purse be bare,
I smoke and cast away all care!

This thread brings up a question that I have had. Is there a reference or website to determine the age of a pipe?

That's a great Link- My brother recently gave me one of my Grandfather's old pipes- A Fischer, from Buffalo, NY- I've been trying to find out any info I could about this brand- that site gives me a good starting point.

As soon as I finish cleaning it up- it will definitely be my oldest pipe- not sure exactly how old, but at least 35 years.

Thanks for the tip. Based on their information, my oldest pipe is a pre-1949 Peterson bulldog.

:o Say it insnt SO! When we moved to your current house in 2000, I packed up my most of my pipes but some had to go in a seperate box. You guessed it. My wife took that box to the salvation army along with some other boxes. It wasnt until about a month after we got settled that I realized half my collection had been donated #3%**@!
